Headed for the Boneyard. Charles Socrates Stannard, circa 1905
"Soc" (1832-1914) as he was known, was the local equine undertaker, an important job before the age of automobiles. He sold their hides and milled the bones for fertilizer at his 'boneyard' near East River. "How shall we forget his appearance at the Guilford Cattle Show and Fair; his presence on the highways and byways at all times of day or night" (Charles Hubbard).

Charles Hubbard’s studio was in the attic of his colonial home in downtown Guilford on 37 Park Street. There he painted, taught and entertained generations of young and old over the years. He paid the going price of 12 to 15 cents an hour for models, such as Josie Scranton (in photo, GHS class of 1914), to sit for him.
